Most garden books show you the good bed in June.

This one has eight sections, and one of them is called What Failed. Write down what died. It is the part every catalog, every garden book and every photograph leaves out, and it is the part you will want in three years when you are deciding whether to try that rose again.

Every page is struck from a quarter-inch grid. A bed plan, a planting row and a sowing date all sit on the same lattice, so you can draw a plot to scale without a ruler and count squares instead of measuring. It is the same grid underneath a garden plan, a knitting chart and a plotted route, which is where the name comes from.
